Mria Sharapova, born April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, Russia, is a Russian tennis player. Her talent has become apparent very early, when at the age of six she was evaluated by Martina Navratilova, who recommended professional training in order to develop her skills.
A year later she moved to Florida with her father, who did everything he could in order to accommodate Maria’s tennis career.
Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, needed one hour and 6 minutes yesterday to defeat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2. The 14th-seeded Sharapova next plays Beatrice Capra, a wild-card entrant who at 371 in the world is the lowest-ranked player to reach the third round at the U.S. Open since 2002.Three times Grand Slam champion,Russia's Maria Sharapova has stormed into the second round of the LA Women's Tennis Championships in Los Angeles. Sharapova ousted Jarmila Groth 6-0 6-4 in first round match on Tuesday.
Sharapova has just recovered from a shoulder injury due to which she was out of the action for the last nine months. Sharapova will now clash with the third seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in second round match.
Not that long ago, Maria Sharapova was one of the fresh faces on the women's professional tennis circuit. Now, three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam, Sharapova finds herself an upset target of up-and-coming players on tour.
Off court she has represented major brands, including Nike, Gatorade and Cannon, making her one of the best paid athletes in the world. She also appeared in swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated among some of the best known supermodels, like Marisa Miller and Alessandra Ambrosio. Maxim magazine ranked Maria as the hottest athlete in the world several years in a row, and FHM magazine ranked her the seventh most eligible bachelorette. In April 2009, a prominent hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, known as the Great Eight, expressed his desire to meet her while interviewed on "Off The Record".
